McCain decries out of control federal spending in SC
In Florence South Carolina John McCain blamed runaway federal spending and warned against short term stimulus plans as unemployment rose to 6.6 percent in December and the state faced its largest one month jobs drop in nearly two decades. He proposed corporate tax cuts to 25 percent and extending tax cuts while opposing widespread tax rebates. He urged long term solutions and said he would work with Bush on a stimulus package but first needed restraint on spending. Huckabee challenged tax shift ideas claiming a national sales tax would force all to pay taxes and referenced social issues. Polls showed McCain and Huckabee in a tight race with Romney third, voters naming the economy as top issue.

Confederate flag ads praise Huckabee target McCain Romney
A Tennessee group Americans for the Preservation of American Culture runs radio ads on South Carolina conservative shows praising Mike Huckabee and attacking John McCain and Mitt Romney over the Confederate flag. The spots claim Romney backed away from the flag and applaud Huckabee for aligning with Southern values while stressing the flag as either racism or Southern pride. The organization says it has no campaign ties to Huckabee.
