After nearly 10 hours of deliberation over two days, a jury failed to reach a verdict in the murder trial of Joseph Hankerson for the Pollin killing. Co defendant Joseph Morrison III is serving a life sentence for Pollin's murder. Morrison was the shooter, and the jury debated Hankerson's involvement.
At the USC Aiken Convocation Center less than 300 people attended the South Carolina GOP rally. Ron Paul spoke to the crowd while major rivals invited seven surrogates. Organizers hoped for a full arena of 4,100 seating.
Republican candidate John McCain told about 300 supporters in Aiken that he would pursue al Qaeda leader bin Laden anywhere. He praised Gen. David Petraeus and the troop surge while saying Al Qaeda is on the run but not defeated and warned against moving troops out of Iraq.
The final two co defendants in the 2005 Aiken murder case pleaded guilty to reduced charges. Willie Ware Ill and Edward Walker received 15 year and 10 year sentences after testifying against Cornell Tyler, the principal shooter, with Tyler already sentenced to 55 years. Both have time served credit and had been in custody since August 2005.
