Belk to Invest 3.6 Million in Aiken Mall Expansion
Belk Inc will spend 3.6 million to expand and renovate its Aiken Mall store in Jacksonville announced by Bud Bergren. The project adds 11,000 square feet and aims for completion by July 5 with renovation finished in summer 2001. The store will stay open during work and seeks to offer enhanced design, lighting and service. Belk has served Aiken since 1947 and operates 13 southeastern stores as the largest privately held department store chain.

Drawdown tests lower river water near North Augusta
Army Corps of Engineers conducted a two day drawdown of the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam reducing water by 5 feet near The Rapids subdivision and 11 feet at the lock site. Mayor Lark Jones announced a public meeting on January 27 at Julian Smith Casino to hear the corps recommendation to cease operation with three minute speaking slots. City water intake remained under water and functional aided by diesel pumps as trees and docks reemerged on the mud by Tuesday.
