Blindly Following May Have Caused Thunderbirds Crash
In Indian Springs Nevada four Thunderbirds died during a practice dive after pilots followed the lead of a fourth aircraft. Maj Norman L Lowry III commander and three other pilots perished as they roared into the desert at around 400 mph. The squadron trains to fly within feet of each other and to watch the adjacent plane not the ground or instruments. Experts wonder if mid air collision or follow the leader into the ground caused the disaster.
