Rudy Mason's name lives on on Aiken bypass
The northeast and east sides of Aiken will gain the final leg of the Aiken Parkway bypass named for the late Rep. Rudy Mason. The SC Department of Transportation announced the official naming during a Columbia ceremony. Mason, a Republican who represented House District 81, died in office in 1999. His widow La Graves Mason welcomed the tribute. Rep. Robert S. Perry, who succeeded Mason, helped push the naming bill. The bypass will connect US 1 and Rutland Drive with SC 302 and US 78, creating a perimeter route to ease downtown traffic. A formal dedication and roadside marker are planned after completion next year.
