In Bentonville Arkansas Circuit Judge David Clinger expressed frustration as a planned mental evaluation for James Baughman a capital murder suspect was not done due to hospital misfiling. The hearing is reset to February 12 with orders to ensure completion or appear in court.
Five inmates at the Aiken County Detention Center were exposed to carbon monoxide during shower stall cleaning by staff using a rented steam cleaner. Inmates were evaluated at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, treated with oxygen, and released after about two hours with stable health. Lt. Vernon Wright confirmed they were doing all right.
The North Augusta Chamber of Commerce begins year six with a January 25 banquet featuring U S Senator Lindsey Graham. Mayor Lark Jones will introduce him as past chairmen are honored and 2000 Citizen of the Year is announced. The event runs 6 to 9 pm at the North Augusta Community Center hosted by TTX Company Hamburg Division.
Kenneth Wayne Sullivan, 40, of Bradley Drive, is charged with assault and battery after allegedly threatening to kill Jessy Elmore and forcing her into his vehicle across the state line into South Carolina. Elmore escaped on Old Aiken Road, sustaining knee and back injuries, as ACSO confirms the incident began in Georgia and is being handled by Richmond County authorities.
Byron Wade Mathis 22 of Brown Lane faces unlawful entry and breaking into a motor vehicle after climbing a razor wire fence at the Aiken County Sheriff's Office impound lot. About 200 in radio electronics and a radar detector were stolen but recovered after a deputy confronted him. Mathis was treated for minor injuries and charged after breaking into three vehicles on the high security lot.
Circuit Judge James R. Barber III sentenced Tony Clark, 35, to five years in prison and a fine of 109103 after a criminal jury convicted him of drug offenses. Clark received 165 days credit for time served awaiting trial. Prosecutors presented testimony from drug agent Mike Jones and former agent John Meldrum.
The Governor's Commission on Women calls for nominations for the 2001 Woman of Achievement Awards to honor South Carolina women. Nominations must be submitted by March 16 with a May ceremony planned. For information call (803) 734 1609.
