Federal death penalty sought in Enoree carjacking case
Attorney Pete Strom says he will seek federal authorization to pursue the death penalty if convicted in the Enoree carjacking case. David Ray Duke, 48, would become the first person sentenced to death under the federal carjacking law. Police say Duke abducted Tina Leigh Casey, 26, at gunpoint on June 14 as her 5 year old son watched. Caseys body was found the next day in a wooded area of Union County.

Hazardous Mud Dredged From Offshore Disaster
A Coast Guard plan to dredge 2,500 tons of dioxin tainted mud from the ocean floor after a barge sank off Charleston. The Padre Island arrived about 344 miles offshore, dredging is to start soon, with cleanup expected in about ten days. The barge had carried polluted mud from New York to Texas when it ran aground October 12.

Worker Electrocuted At Donaldson Center

First Sentenced Under New Public Charities Law
George Edward Harvey of Monetta pleaded guilty to unlawful telephone solicitations and received 30 25 and 30 day sentences from Circuit Judge Henry F Floyd, becoming the first person punished under the state charity solicitation law. He was arrested November 2 in Aiken County while soliciting donations for the S C State Troopers Association, held on 300000 bond, and was taken from the courtroom to the Aiken County Detention Center. Attorney Christian Adams said complaints from residents prompted the arrest as investigators traced the operation to a building on East Pine Log Road. Tom Windsor of the secretary of state office investigated the case.
