The Aiken Standard will publish a special edition to mark Aiken's 150th birthday on April 30. Edited by Donald M. Law the issue will recount the city's history and highlight key events and people while ads are now being accepted.
C L Skip Townsend elected chairman of the Aiken County Democratic Party pledges no drastic changes. Townsend, a longtime party ally, will lead the 60 member executive committee and succeeds Dr. Paul Weston. He lives in New Ellenton and owns Southern Recruiters and Consultants Inc. Townsend is a USC graduate with law degrees and Army service.
Cloudy skies should clear by tomorrow with highs in the mid 50s and tonight's low in the low 30s. The Saturday outlook calls for cool windy weather with afternoon temps in the 40s while Sunday and Monday turn clear and cold with teens in the morning and 30s in the afternoons.

South Carolina Senator Ryan Shealy proposes a statewide lottery to fund indigent medical care without raising state taxes. He says about 70 million could be generated but 45 percent would cover administration. The bill, referred to judiciary, lacks co sponsors and faces political sensitivity.

Rep. Butler Derrick says John S. Herrington would be an improvement over the prior energy secretary citing NPR site concerns. Senator Strom Thurmond praises Herrington a strong choice with White House personnel leadership since 1983 and former Baker aide.
H Earle Holley, board chairman and CEO of Palmetto Federal Savings and Loan in Aiken, retires. John W. Cunningham, formerly Graniteville Company executive and vice chairman since 1983, will become Holley’s successor. Holley remains on the board and chairs Palmetto Service Corp, while retaining involvement in real estate ventures.
The South Carolina Election Commission urged the General Assembly to consider sweeping election reforms including automated vote tallying in every county at an estimated cost of 5 to 10 million dollars. The plan aims to eliminate paper ballots and standardize procedures despite no system being chosen.
