The Aiken Standard announces its 14th annual horse edition to be published Friday March 15. It leads off Aiken's Triple Crown of Racing with events including the Aiken Trials March 16 the Aiken Hunt Meet March 23 and the Aiken Sulky Races March 30. Advertising space is open in the newspaper's advertising department.
Representatives Woodruff and Sharpe delivered a letter to Governor Riley with copies to Thurmond Hollings and Derrick endorsing SRP expansion. A petition from 6,500 Aiken County residents accompanied the message. Proposals include locating a new production reactor NPR and using wasted steam from the river.

The Aiken Planning Commission votes to urge the City Council to amend zoning rules to ban earth satellite antennas in front yards of residential zones and to include satellite dishes in the defined structures. Existing front yard dishes may remain for five years subject to the amendment.
Julius Ness emerged unopposed for the state Supreme Court associate justice seat to replace Chief Justice Littlejohn, with a election set for this legislative session. Ness, 68, noted the tradition of elevating a Supreme Court member, and lawmakers expect smooth relations between the branches.
South Carolina House approved a resolution to honor Martin Luther King Jr on his birthday with a state House service of celebration on January 20, 1986. A 10 member committee will be appointed by leaders, with no state funds used for the observance, amid debate over King's ties to the state and the national holiday status.
Aiken County Council unanimously approved converting an unused ambulance into a mobile arson lab for a county wide task force led by Sheriff Carrol Heath. The unit should be operational by February with investigators from Aiken North Augusta Sheriff's Department and Fireman's Association.
Governor Dick Riley will speak to a joint session at 7 p.m. outlining a broad agenda covering health and environmental issues. Key points include nuclear and hazardous waste storage, a drought management plan, minimum industrial water standards, and a $90 million indigent health care proposal costing about $15 million to the state.
