Public comment sought on HEU shipments to Savannah River Site
The Department of Energy plans to transport 900 kilograms of highly enriched uranium from Germany to SRS under the Atoms for Peace program. A public comment meeting is set for Feb. 4 at the North Augusta Community Center, with a 45 day comment period opening after the Environmental Assessment release. The draft assessment finds minimal risk in transport and storage, though stakeholders warn of health and legal obligations concerns. If approved, HEU would arrive as graphite spheres and be processed at SRS facilities to disposition the material.

Longtime educator honored with 90th birthday at Mead Hall
Aiken residents gathered Thursday at Mead Hall to salute Bob Harrington, a longtime educator who served Aiken Preparatory School as teacher from 1947 to 2010 and headmaster from 1971 to 1988. Family and colleagues praised his teaching span in Latin French English literature and math, with Rob Harrington noting his early work in fifth grade. The event coincided with Mead Hall expanding to kindergarten through 12th grade after absorbing Aiken Prep facilities in 2012.
