James William Thoma died December 7 2016 in Aiken at 72 with wife Mary and sons James Jr Christopher and Matthew present. He was born July 6 1944 in Sioux City Iowa the son of Richard A Thoma and Margaret Gene Wood. He grew up in Columbus Ohio and played football and basketball in high school. He attended the University of Cincinnati before starting Chemlawn in 1972 and opening the first Chemlawn franchise in Georgia and South Carolina in 1982. He divorced in Aiken and remarried Mary Watkins in 1993. He retired in 2011 and enjoyed time with family including nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He donated his body to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine for future physicians. A small family memorial will be held at the USC School of Medicine main campus in Columbia in April.
