The Aiken Standard will be closed Monday in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with normal delivery to resume Tuesday. Customer service lines for missed deliveries run 7 to 9 a.m. at 648 2311. The paper reopens Tuesday at 8 30 a.m.

Aiken residents from all races joined a Martin Luther King Day parade at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center. Led by Lessie Price and Willar Hightower, the event honored King and his dream with remarks about justice, unity, and legacy for youth.
An AP-Ipsos poll finds most Americans see significant progress toward racial equality since the civil rights era. Blacks show more skepticism while racial integration spreads in daily life and economic gains are noted since the movement’s peak.
Ipsos for AP surveyed 1,242 adults including 312 blacks from Jan 9 to 12. Whites 21 percent say progress occurred, blacks 18 percent, with a 3 point margin of error. Respondents varied on whether significant progress has been made toward racial equality.
Tens of thousands of elderly poor may have trouble getting medicines during the first two weeks of the government drug benefit. About 20 states have stepped in as issues persist, including enrollment glitches and high upfront costs. CMS chief Mark McClellan pledges fixes and cooperation with states and plans to ensure prescriptions are available.
In Warrenville the first Aiken County Habitat For Humanity Women Build home nears completion in the Warrenridge subdivision. Janice Johnson says progress is well ahead of schedule with final touches left including flooring carpet and baseboards. More than 250 women volunteers joined the project started Oct 29 and Cecelia Mark and others praise the program for community bonds and learning opportunities.
