President Ford seeks an $182 billion price increase to reduce petroleum appetite while threatening oil import quotas if demand remains high. Senate Leader Hugh Scott backs the plan, contrasted by criticism from Democrats as gasoline and natural gas costs rise.
South Vietnamese command reports heavy clashes along the Cambodian border west of Saigon and in the central coastal plain near Bong Son. They say 151 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed and three armored personnel carriers destroyed since Monday dawn attack on a government border post 55 miles west of Saigon. Six government troops killed and 35 wounded.
In its first hearing day the Rockefeller commission signaled limits on investigating CIA actions. Nelson A. Rockefeller said time and staff constraints hinder pursuing information from former CIA agents, then issued a statement inviting specific factual tips from current or former CIA members about domestic CIA activities.
