Jackson teen dies in ATV accident on Gum Swamp Road
Cody Stephens age 13 from Jackson died Friday after noon in an ATV crash on Gum Swamp Road near Jackson and Beech Island. The vehicle rolled onto him during a ride with other children. he was not wearing a helmet and succumbed to chest trauma at the Medical College of Georgia. He attended Jackson Middle School and was the son of Cody Lee Stephens and Dale Boyd Stephens.

Former deputy cleared in Ga slaying case in Richmond County
Richmond County District Attorney Danny Craig said a former Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputy who shot his girlfriend Brent Bish was cleared. Augusta resident Laura Hughes 22 faced speculation about charges of reckless conduct or involuntary manslaughter after the Aug 28 shooting. They resigned from the sheriff's office June 5 2001. Bish died after Hughes fired a .40 Glock at his chest during a joking moment.
