Holiday tax deadline pushed back by holiday
Alken County officials say a 3 percent penalty will be added to all unpaid 1995 taxes effective Thursday. Because Martin Luther King Day shifted the grace period, payments with a January 17 postmark will be honored if received in local post offices by 6 p.m. that day. Some properties were billed at 80 percent due to unsettled appeals, and the reduced bill must be paid to avoid penalties. The penalty does not apply to monthly motor vehicle taxes.

Two Upstate Boys Die After Falling In Pond
In Greenville County two boys aged 11 and 8 drowned after slipping through an ice covered pond while snow and sleet battered the Upstate. Brandon Hatsell and Nicholas J. Camerato, both of Simpsonville, were in the water about 75 to 105 minutes before rescue attempts failed.
