Legislator Seeks Judgeship Resume in South Carolina
Rep. Thomas E Huff of North Augusta plans to resign from the House Tuesday to run for a seat on the state Court of Appeals. He will hand in his resignation letter to Speaker David Wilkins and return an uncashed party check. Huff said he will not wait for the Judicial Screening Committee’s ratings, which are due by month end. The vacancy in House District 83 will trigger a special election. Former Rep. Charles Stone, who lost to Huff in 1994, said he will not run. Eddie Butler noted the time demands of filing, primary, and general elections may end the session. Huff previously sought an Appeals Court seat in 1993 but lost to Carol Connor. The push for judgeships has drawn scrutiny from the State Bar Association and debate over rating processes. Connor’s husband, Palmer Freeman, is a Columbia lawyer and lobbyist.
