Civic center that never met expectations closed

Greenwood Civic Center on Highway 72 221 sits empty 38 years after ground breaking and 37 after doors opened. Built in 1976 for 1.6 million funded half by the state and half by city and county, it failed to draw crowds or sustain events. The first show after a 1977 opening was a Grenadier Guards performance.

Legislators in South Carolina earn far more than salaries

A State newspaper analysis shows part time lawmakers in South Carolina receive expenses that lift average pay to about $31,000 annually, far beyond the $10,400 base salary. Critics call the base pay absurdly low, while others urge alignment with other states. Senator John Scott proposes about $37,000 yearly.
