A warm trend lifts daytime temps into the 50s and possibly low 60s by Friday as arctic air leaves the region. Overnight lows stay chilly, with mid 20s to low 30s expected, and forecasters call for mostly sunny skies today through Thursday and a chance of rain into the weekend.
City officials say Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has scoped out Aiken as a potential location after a decade of survey work. City Manager Roger LeDuc notes the area along Whiskey Road, near Target, as a possible site with nearby outlets in Columbia and Georgia. Unconfirmed talk also places it at Rick's Produce on Whiskey Road.
Aiken Corp. will pursue other funding sources for the first phase of the Aiken Railroad Depot construction. The group planned to ask City Council for a 1.3 million loan, but chair Wade Brodie said they will seek the lowest interest rate. He noted a city loan could save about 52 thousand dollars annually with a 2 percent rate, while the city would gain about 13 thousand dollars yearly at 1 percent above the state pool. Funds would pay loan interest to Security Federal Bank and finish dioramas.

USC President Dr. Harris Pastides told Aiken Rotary Club that the system faces a 9 percent budget cut, with options including program reductions and tuition hikes while keeping quality intact. He noted many adjuncts won’t be invited back and urged avoiding furloughs, as applications rise and in-state discounts remain.
