President Nixon cites a crossroads for world prosperity and urges unprecedented diplomatic effort. He sent letters to oil producers and oil consuming nations proposing a February 11 Washington meeting as a first step toward a new international energy framework.
Government analysis attributes most bread price increases since major grain sales to the Soviet Union to middleman costs and bakery margins rather than record farm prices. A July 1972 loaf averaged 24.5 cents, rising to 31.5 cents in November. farm ingredients rose 2.7 cents, with wheat flour up 2.2 cents, plus 4.3 cents from mills and bakers.
Ten years after the surgeon general report on smoking and health, Sen. Moss and health groups prepare a petition to the CPSC to regulate cigarettes as hazardous substances. Dr. Luther L. Terry attends the signing of a nonsmokers bill of rights by 33 health agencies in Philadelphia Congress Hall.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger heads to the Middle East with aims to ease troop disengagement around the Suez Canal. A senior official says he may present a formal proposal at the Geneva peace conference, or at least bring Egypt and Israel closer to talks.
Washington reports a major shift in US long range missile targets from Soviet cities to Russian bases command centers and other military sites. The move seeks an option for a limited response to Russian adventurism in Europe or elsewhere.
Sen. Strom Thurmond told the Aiken Standard that the first half of 1974 may see a slight recession with unemployment not rising much. He cited rising incomes, more jobs, easier credit, and growing exports as reasons the crisis would be mild and said no broad controls were needed. He noted inflation harms fixed incomes and supported raising Social Security thresholds.
The Associated Press reports a bitter winter storm across the nation from Texas to New England. Freezing rain and up to 10 inches of snow closed schools in Kansas and Missouri and caused hazardous conditions from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast. Subzero cold and several shovel-related deaths noted in multiple states.
Aiken police investigate theft of a green metal cash box with between $800 and $1,200 missing from Dunbar's American Service Station on York Street. Box taken sometime between 6:50 and 7:40 p m. A cash bag and a $200 battery charger were also reported missing from Redd's Garage after a break in through a broken window.
Aiken County Commission Chairman Harold V. Graybeal defended a cautious response to the county audit and the administrator's proposals. He argued the legislative act restricts elected officials from infringing on magistrates and suggested magistrates should seek improvements through the chief magistrate.
Weather outlook predicts more rain and thundershowers. A 50 percent chance today, 70 percent tonight, and 20 percent Saturday. Temperatures around 80, with cooler, partly cloudy conditions Saturday in the upper 60s. Sunday also cooler.
State Rep. C Marshall Cain of Aiken warned of a 35 million dollar annual debt and praised Wall Street triple A ratings while Sen. Gilbert McMillan argued spending is spiraling into social programs. Cain cited 836 million dollar proposed budget with 574 million debt and 102 million highway debt. McMillan noted budget growth from 174 million in 1960 to 757 million in 1973 and urged cutting welfare and education spending to curb socialism.
At the 50-Plus Sertoma Club meeting yesterday Robert Nathans was re elected president. Sherman Lloyd will be vice president William A McKee secretary and Ralph Egan treasurer. Also includes a thought about happiness and a quote attributed to Einstein.
A final pathology report identifies the late December skeleton found by a North Augusta man near the I twenty Welcome Center as a black male between 40 and 70 years old. The remains measure about five feet seven to eight inches in height.

Chaplain Col James R Boggs US Army stationed Fort Gordon is principal speaker. Tickets limited to 300 and on sale at banks S and L, and Chamber office on Laurens Street.
