The South Carolina Senate begins the 2001 session with Republicans in the majority for the first time in years. Senator Glenn McConnell won the president pro tempore post by 23 to 20, unseating Democrat John Drummond who stressed cooperation beyond race and party lines amid partisan concerns. Senator Tommy Moore remains a top Democrat as the chamber adjusts to changed control.
South Carolina Republicans take control of the Senate for the first time since 1876 and replace the seniority system with a strict majority rule. Key committee chairs shift to GOP members including Leatherman, Giese, McConnell, and Wilson. In the House, Republicans begin the session by advancing over 200 bills to committees.
The Aiken County Board of Education voted 9-0 to teach only the state science curriculum, ending a yearlong push to include both evolution and creation or neither. Attorney Bill Burkhalter cited legal authority and neutrality rules, warning that teaching both could violate constitutional mandates. Dr. Allen Dennis of USC Aiken attended as a visitor.
Aiken residents described Tuesday morning snow as beautiful and unexpected. Meteorologists from the SRS Weather Center had warned of only a 20 percent chance of light snow, and Allen Weber credited the forecast while noting the snowfall exceeded expectations.
Dee Stanford a United Way employee and Jamie Culbertson of USC Aiken shared joy over an unexpected snowfall. Weber explained that a high level system shifted farther south than expected causing the winter mix and snow.
Forecast notes an oval shaped snow system moving down the Savannah River and predicts rare snowfall unlikely soon. Clear and sunny today and Thursday with mid 50s highs. slight rain chance arrives late Thursday and Friday, with a 20 to 30 percent rain potential. Saturday cools to high 50s with clearing skies.
Education Week’s Quality Counts report places South Carolina among the top five states for raising standards and accountability and improving teacher quality. Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum notes national recognition supports the reform plan, while middle grade certification credits are not fully counted.
