Aiken Airport Seeks Land Swap And Hangar Expansion

Aiken City Council tentatively approves a land swap with Aiken Municipal Airport. FBO owner Mike Laver and Royal Robbins say the exchange frees land for future hangars while the city gains usable land. A 10 year lease extension is sought to secure financing. WHOA program lauded for work in Aiken community

City of Aiken officials praised the WHOA program at a Rotary Club meeting. We Help Out Aiken started in 1999 to mobilize youths to clean abandoned lots, learn job skills, and boost neighborhood pride while integrating with Demo 200 to demolish derelict buildings. Since 1989 it has helped demolish 35 buildings and clean 24 lots.

La Presl Drummings, 28, was charged by grand jury with carrying a concealed weapon after police found an 18 inch steel socket driver on her person following a January 2000 fight at the Green Boundary Club. The case links to a 1999 traffic incident involving Lt. Frank Conoly who fired after clashing with Drummings.
