The Celebrate Aiken committee shifts the Sights Sounds and Tastes of 1835 indoor. The event invites 2,000 guests to dress in 1835 era clothing and enjoy historic demonstrations by interpreters: a potter, blacksmith, spinner, weaver, broom and rope makers, soap makers, and quilters. Entertainment includes a flea circus, medicine show, clogging, gospel choir, washboard band, toys, games, and a $1 tasting of six 1835 dishes. Hot coffee and cider served.
William Aiken Sr. founded and led the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Co., chartered 1824 and established 1827. He died in 1831 at age 52 before the town of Aiken, designed by Dexter in 1834, took his name. The common portrait labeled Aiken is actually William Aiken Jr. and no confirmed image of Aiken Sr. exists.
