Public Safety Dept urged to tighten uninsured motorist tax controls
State auditors say the Public Safety Department should have received 58 million in uninsured motorist tax revenue from 1985 to 1997 but money was deposited into the general fund. The 1997 law change requires direct department payment. The audit cites inadequate insurance tax verification and urges use of premium-based tax to improve collection and auditing.
