East Blizzard Paralyzes Traveled Region Forcing Closures

A severe East Coast blizzard paralyzed travel and shut schools as up to three feet of snow piled up in parts of Pennsylvania New Jersey and New York. Philadelphia reported 27 inches New York 22 and Washington DC a record 18 with at least 20 deaths blamed on the storm and widespread power outages. Many motorists sought shelter at motels while flights trains and car travel became nearly impossible.

College Freshmen Less Interested In Activism

A UCLA survey of 323,701 entering freshmen at 641 colleges finds rising political apathy and a sense of powerlessness. About 34 percent say one person can do little to change society, a 10 year high, while commitment to political affairs fell to 28.5 percent. Activism in environment, race relations, and community action also declined as students grow more cynical of government and politicians.

Mitterrand, France's Socialist Leader, Dies at 79

Former Socialist president Francois Mitterrand died at 8:30 am in Paris at age 79 after a long cancer battle. He led France from 1981 to 1995, orchestrated Europe’s unity, and shaped Paris through grand projects while facing criticism over wartime ties and health.

Soul Singer In L A Hearing In Question

Los Angeles singer James Brown mourns the death of his wife Adrienne Lois Brown who collapsed and died two days after cosmetic surgery. Brown, 62, was distraught over the stormy 10 year marriage says his lawyer Buddy Dallas. The death could affect a criminal domestic violence hearing set for Brown in Aiken County. The hearing was scheduled for Jan 30 on a charge stemming from an Oct 1 incident in which Mrs Brown alleged she was beaten by the singer.
