A 42 year old woman in Greenville has been diagnosed with the year's first meningitis case, initially thought viral but later confirmed bacterial. Three contacts were treated to prevent spread at Greenville Memorial Hospital as South Carolina sees rising bacterial meningitis cases from 1994 to 1996.
Four obituary notices appear on Page 6A. Dorothy Fletcher of North Augusta Ines Frank of Williston Harold Gyles Hendricks of Beaufort and Andrew B. Scott of Dallas are named with brief notices detailing their passing and origin.
President Clinton proposed a seven year balanced budget to Republicans during late night budget negotiations as a path to end the three week federal shutdown. GOP critics say the plan spends too much and raises taxes, while CBO estimates suggest deficits would vanish by 2002. Senate Daschle originally authored the proposal.

Adrienne Lois Brown, 47, wife of soul singer James Brown, died Saturday in Los Angeles two days after elective surgery. She was pronounced dead at Century City Hospital after paramedics arrived. Funeral arrangements will be handled locally by C.A. Reid Sr. Memorial Funeral Home in Augusta. Paramedics had been called to an after care facility in Beverly Hills where Mrs. Brown was recovering.
