Civilian unemployment eased to 6.9 percent last month, the lowest since April 1980, in a report marking the labor market’s best showing of Reagan’s presidency. The 0.1 point drop comes with 237,000 new jobs and 138,000 fewer unemployed Americans.
House Democratic leader Rep. Richard Gephardt says a tax hike, possibly an energy tax on imported oil, is the logical candidate to raise new federal revenues for a deficit-cutting plan with President Reagan. The idea aims to soften the impact of a new budget-balancing law as part of a grand compromise.
The WGUY-FM Bangor station urged listeners to send parcels of clean garbage to Libyan leader Muammar Khadafy as an anti-terrorist message. Manager Jack Roberts says the campaign has reached many talk shows across the country five days after starting.

President Reagan, calling Libyan leader Muammar Khadafy flaky and a barbarian, ordered all American companies and workers to quit Libya by month end to show the U S will not tolerate terrorism. He said irrefutable evidence tied Khadafy to the Dec 27 Rome Vienna airport massacres, urging European allies to join in isolating him.
Aiken County faces a near 1 million dollar surplus after the 1985 audit. Council chairman Carrol H. Warner favors reducing taxes or bankrolling the surplus for future tax relief while council members debate the best use. State-shared revenue now fully funded boosts the 1986 budget.
President Reagan announced comprehensive Libya sanctions including a total U S trade ban and bans on travel to Libya and commercial activities by Americans. Credits and loans to Libya are prohibited, with winddown allowed until Feb 1. Imports and exports to Libya end Feb 1 except for publications humanitarian aid. Travel ban to Libya takes effect Feb 1.
