Tax form error may cost South Carolinians thousands

Thousands of South Carolinians could lose up to $600 due to an error in a state income tax worksheet from the Revenue Department. The misprint affects married couples when one spouse is under 65 and the other is 65 or older. Revised worksheets offered for joint tax filers under 65

A misprint on a South Carolina income tax worksheet may cost filers up to 600 dollars. To obtain a revised form call 800-768-3676, visit the DOR site at dor.state.se.us, write to FORMS PO Box 125 Columbia SC, or pick up a form January 15 at The Grand Affair State Fairgrounds. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will have forms available February 8, with information line (888) 227-7669 available from January 15.

Taxpayers 65 or older in South Carolina face refunds errors

About 49,000 taxpaying households in South Carolina have a filer 65 or older and only a tenth of those households have a spouse younger than 65. Revenue Department spokeswoman Vicki Ringer notes a worst case $632 tax savings loss and cites mailed tax packages without corrected worksheets. State Sen. Ernie Passailaigue urges notifying affected taxpayers to avoid filing errors. The department may review returns from couples with one spouse over 65 to identify misapplied worksheets, and address double dipping is considered too complex.

Federal judge to hear video gambling case next month

US District Judge Joseph Anderson in Columbia postponed ruling on the nearly two billion dollar video poker dispute.
