Former St. Angela property auctioned to local banks

A public auction sold St. Angela Academy on Berrie Road for 175000 to Palmetto Federal Savings Bank, mortgage holder, and Ridgely Hall for 514000 to Security Federal, mortgage holder. The houses trace back to Winthrop Rutherford and dating from 1929, with the school built in the 1950s and closed in 1968. Joel Conte previously owned the properties.

Foreclosure action filed against Aiken Mall owners

Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. has filed a 29 million foreclosure action in Aiken County against the mall owners, a limited partnership that owns the south side property. Zamias Services of Johnstown Pa. manages the mall. Monthly payments of about 242000 were missed, triggering the 27.6 million principal plus about 1.5 million interest debt. The mortgage holder says the suit should not affect mall operations with Belk J C Penney and Sears as major tenants.

Leaders urge Bath Aiken County lawmakers to oppose video poker legalization and push to abolish electronic gambling. Thousands of local families returned to routine as schools in Aiken County reopened after two weeks of Christmas vacation.
