Two black males remained at large after an armed robbery at the Eastside Gulf station on S.C. 78 in Aiken. They allegedly grabbed an employee from behind, claimed a gun, demanded money, and fled, possibly in a vehicle. The amount stolen is undetermined and the case is under investigation.
An 18 year old Aiken man Roger Allen Saucier died when his motorcycle struck a low hanging cable on private property. He was knocked from the Yamaha and died instantly from a broken neck. The accident occurred about 2 20 yesterday afternoon. He lived on Huckleberry Drive and was a South Aiken High School graduate employed in construction with Du Pont.
Cold night with a low around 30 ushers in a chilly start. Friday warms to 40s with rain possible Thursday night. Highs reach mid 50s Wednesday and upper 30s to 40s by Friday as sun returns. Early mornings stay in the 20s on Wednesday and Thursday.
A North Augusta High School team will appear on Winthrop Challenge this Saturday afternoon at 5 30 p m on SCETYV. Thurlow spoke of Strom Thurmond as grand marshal and urged using presidential influence to bring him to Aiken.
A government study of 17 000 high school seniors shows cocaine use has stayed steady since 1979 at 16 percent trying it, with 6 percent monthly users, despite rising disapproval and a shift away from marijuana and tobacco. Alcohol and cigarette use also declined slightly.
County Administrator W Scott Barnes unveils a 10 point plan to reduce jail costs. It screens officers by merit and fills four vacancies with former staff, boosts volunteer prisoner labor for road work, improves confinement procedures, and cuts food expenses by serving meals only to prisoners and staff.

Aiken County Council will consider transferring jail oversight from the Sheriff's Department to county supervision at 7 p.m. in council chambers 736 Richland Ave. A public hearing will review the jail ordinance and an amendment to the litter ordinance to raise penalties for dumping and littering with a $100 minimum fine. The first meeting of the new administration will appoint council boards and name a new vice chair. Councilwoman LaWana McKenzie is the only new member.
