Phoenix AP reports astronaut Frank Borman may seek the U S Senate seat held by Barry Goldwater in 1974. Goldwater said he would likely not run and would like Borman to succeed him. Borman, Apollo 8 commander, noted a 1972 run was possible but unlikely.
Washington sources say President Nixon may push increases in excise taxes including a steep tobacco levy to help meet a balanced budget. Treasury has drafted several revenue options for fiscal 1971 to be outlined in the January budget message. Proposals could affect gasoline, autos, liquor, tobacco, and telephone service.
General Electric rejects a fact finding proposal in an 11 week strike by 12 unions and anticipates progress as government mediator counts in. The two largest unions had accepted the Javits proposed board while Shultz announces Counts will join talks later this week.
A man who stole a pickup in Dothan Alabama drove to Oklahoma City and lived in the truck for three nights. Chilled and broke down, he turned himself in at police headquarters and asked for a warm jail cell and coffee. Detective Orville Summers reported the incident.
Harry S. Dent of South Carolina, a Columbia attorney and top adviser to President Nixon, has been named special counsel. The upgrade from deputy counsel broadens duties and authority while keeping similar political advisory work on a larger scale with more staff.

President Nixon added three Negroes and two whites to the governor's emergency council aiding Gulf Coast reconstruction after Hurricane Camille. Press Secretary Ziegler said the move follows civil rights leaders' complaints about relief fund distribution and aims for equitable disbursement.

The group aims for federal matching funds under the Omnibus Crime Bill and the Office of Economic Opportunity.
U S and South Vietnamese forces reported heavy fighting from the Cambodian border to the Demilitarized Zone. The battles, aided by bombers and gunships, left nearly 300 North Vietnamese dead and minimal allied casualties. American losses: 1 dead, 29 wounded. ARVN: 8 killed, 32 wounded. B52 strikes targeted staging areas near the Laotian border and Hamberger Hill area.
