Program sends horses to death in federal plan
An Associated Press investigation finds the U S Wild Horse and Burro Program channelling thousands of horses to slaughterhouses. Since creation 25 years ago the program has round up 165 000 animals and spent 250 million dollars. Bureau of Land Management employees profit from the slaughter. Many former BLM horses sent to slaughter are young and healthy. Adopters pay 125 dollars per horse and can take up to four annually earning title after one year. AP traced more than 57 former BLM horses sold to slaughterhouses since September using freeze brand numbers. Eighty percent were under ten and 25 percent under five.
