Reagan Misses First 1988 Budget Deadline
The Reagan administration failed to deliver the required budget blueprint by the January 4 deadline for the next fiscal year's spending. White House budget director James C. Miller III stated it would be impossible to assemble a responsible proposal before mid February. He cited unfinished fiscal 1988 tax and spending bills and the need to absorb those details before completing the fiscal 1989 budget. The Defense Department must redo its request due to the two year deficit control agreement. Capitol Hill was already expecting a late submission while lawmakers were home for holidays.
