Solar home cuts costs with sun powered attic system
Engineer Jeff Warren built a $60,000 home for $30,000 with a solar attic heating and cooling system. The system, adapted from Clemson research, stores heat in a 48-ton rock bed and uses south facing glass panels and black interior walls to maximize solar gain. The setup should cut annual utility bills by 500 to 700 dollars, with tax credits near 1000 dollars, and will be taught in a USC Aiken continuing education course beginning January 17.
