GAO findings on AT-400 program and related nuclear residues
The Government Accounting Office warned the DOE spent nearly 50 million before terminating the AT-400 container program. DOE then spent 8.7 million in 1998 1999 for the terminated AT-400 program and plans to spend at least 9.8 million to blend and repackage nuclear residues from Rocky Flats for shipment to the Savannah River Site. Mason Hanger Corp developed a sealed insert to store plutonium pits but the drum was unsuitable for shipping. pits will be placed in those inserts and repackaging should finish in 2004 per the inspector general report.
