County backs amendment to water withdrawal law

Aiken County Council urged the Aiken County Legislative Delegation to back amendment H. 3564 to the 2010 Water Withdrawal Act. The bill would require a permitting process for agricultural withdrawals over 3 million gallons per month, add a longer public-notice period, ensure in-stream flow, and require a backup water source for large operations. The move follows Walther Farms Edisto River irrigation concerns and involves Rep. James Smith and Rep. Bill Taylor with calls for support from Rep. Bill Hixon and Rep. Chris Corley.
