Conoly firing upheld by Aiken grievance panel

The five hour decision upheld Frank Conoly's firing from the Aiken Department of Public Safety after a 21 year tenure. City Manager Roger LeDuc affirmed the ruling and a letter was sent to Candy. NAACP leader Rev. David Walker and Wallace Drumming welcomed the outcome as justice served. Conoly faced charges of unnecessary force during a January 3 Whiskey Road stop.

Phony robbery yields dual five year sentences

A south side pawn shop employee, Steve Sharpe, received two five year terms after pleading guilty to staging a robbery to hide video poker losses. Judge Frank Eppes reduced them to five years probation and ordered restitution around 1160 to South Side Pawn and Gold after Sharpe filed a false 911 report on August 13.

Controlled fire scorches land by Aiken Technical College

A controlled burn at Aiken Technical College expanded despite winds. McMerry Construction crews clearing nearby area sparked the blaze. Langley Fire Department and Graniteville-Vaucluse-Warrenville volunteers fought flames spreading beyond campus. About 78 acres burned. no structures damaged and classes continued.

GOP pushes for video poker regs in South Carolina

The House Ways and Means Committee ordered the Revenue Department to draft tax and fee regulations for the 2 billion video gambling industry. The joint resolution seeks annual state revenue of 200 million from the sector, caps at 125 dollars per day, and background checks with advertising limits. The measure avoids Hodges approval and requires a two thirds in both chambers to pass the budget.

Home Depot Plans to Open in Aiken by Late 1999

Home Depot Mid South Store Support Group and city officials confirm plans for a new 110000 square foot store with a 23000 square foot outdoor garden area in Aiken. Groundbreaking expected in March, with opening in early fourth quarter 1999 after parking lot updates and demolition of several abandoned buildings. Lowe’s already operates a 114000 square foot facility on Whiskey Road and welcomes the competition as a boost to local shopping.
