The 80 unit Holiday Inn opened today in Aiken and is already booked for Masters Week. Innkeeper Tommy Cook reports at least 15 rooms occupied last night and reservations were filled six weeks prior. The motel cost about $600000 and sits in the southeast quadrant.
Reporters toured the Aiken County Stockade amid crowded, dirty quarters and minimal security. Guards were away with road details while two trusted inmates gave a verbal tour and described conditions including 37 prisoners confined and past overcrowding fears.
The Aiken County stockade will receive 60000 in local funds matched by a 30000 LEAP federal grant to remodel to state standards. County Supervisor Mackey Scott said bids may be advertised next week and prison labor will cut costs from the earlier 82500 estimate.
American ground troops fought their largest clash in months 42 miles east of Saigon. U S Command reported 21 wounded and no fatalities after a five hour battle south of Cross Sabers artillery base. Enemy casualties were not immediately known.

Britain's 280,000 coal miners vote 210,039 to 7,581 to accept a 20 percent pay rise from the National Coal Board ending a nationwide strike. The pay offer follows a government appointed inquiry and mines will resume production on Monday.

The plan would have empowered local ordinances if approved by referendum but was voted down 3-1 by the House. A compromise between House and Senate remains possible, though a council manager form seems unlikely soon. Williams had previously opposed an earlier council proposal during his campaign yet favored the concept in principle.

Police report a Belvedere Texaco at High way 25 and Johnston Road robbed at 12 20 a m by two black males who escaped on foot with 1200 to 1500 dollars. Victims include store owner Bernard Lynn and the Harts. one man struck, minor head injury. Investigation by Aiken County Sheriff’s Department.
