The Federal Reserve Board boosted the discount rate from 6.5 to 7 percent effective immediately citing inflationary pressures. The move follows requests from 10 of 12 district banks and comes as banks raise prime lending rates to 11.5 percent. This is the third hike since Alan Greenspan became chair in mid-1987.
Snow and icy roads force postponement of The Pulse A Tattling Tabloid at Etherredge Center USC Aiken. Tickets will be honored Sunday at 3 p.m. if tonight’s 8 p.m. show is canceled, another 8 p.m. performance planned, plus a Saturday matinee at 2 and an 8 p.m. evening show. The musical is an annual benefit for the Aiken Women's Heart Board.
Early spring break arrived as snow forced closures from kindergarten to college across Aiken County. Light snow grew heavy by afternoon, prompting bread and milk shortages in several supermarkets. Eight to ten inches fell in parts of the area with minimal accidents reported and shoppers described empty bread aisles while waiting at checkout.

President Bush vowed to back Defense Secretary nominee John Tower through a Senate vote despite Armed Services Committee concerns about Tower's character. Chairman Sam Nunn cited questions of judgment as the panel, by party lines, recommended rejecting the nomination. Bush spoke in Tokyo during Emperor Hirohito's funeral, insisting he would stand by Tower amid a domestic political setback.
A 21 gun salute marked the five hour entombment of Emperor Hirohito as Akihito, 85, led a ritual ceremony in Tokyo. Police say a bomb on the expressway embankment briefly disrupted the procession, blamed on radical guerrillas. The $74 million funeral spanned Shinto rites, royal processions, and security operations across a rain-soaked day with leaders from 163 nations attending.
FAA reports a United Airlines flight from Honolulu to Aukland returned with a large hole in the right fuselage near the front door. five or six passengers were missing, with engines No. 3 and No. 4 failing during the ascent before the emergency landing in Honolulu.
