Penn Central trustees gather in Philadelphia to decide on the bankrupt railroad fate as reports warn of possible shutdown without new federal money. The line faces 16.4 million dollars in bills due Tuesday, including payroll checks, affecting 16 states and 200,000 rolling stock pieces.

Gurney also faces unlawful compensation and four counts of making false statements to the grand jury. He is the first incumbent senator indicted since 1924.
Assistant Secretary of Defense William K Brehm says a three year minimum service for the all volunteer force poses very small risk to recruitment. He comments after Defense Secretary James R Schlesinger announced on ABCs Issues and Answers that the enlistment minimum will rise from two to three years.
