Forest officials conduct controlled burns in Hitchcock Woods to remove dead foliage and debris and reduce wildfire risk. Today’s burn targets Devil's Backbone, Traverse Line, and Doll Lane areas as crews work toward a spring goal of 700 acres.
Police conclude the pedestrian death involving 11 year old Christian Nicole Griffin was an accident after the Accident Reconstruction Team finished its inquiry. George Robert Shelton’s van struck Griffin around 7 45 pm in front of her Beaufort Street apartment and the Food Lion store.

Beech Island man Robert Dorsett, jailed since November on sexually related charges involving minors, had bond reduced from 437000 to 150000 by Circuit Judge Frank Eppes who ordered house arrest with an ankle monitor.
