A 11 year old boy, Carson Abele, remains in critical condition at an Augusta hospital after being struck by a car while crossing Whiskey Road Monday. He suffered a head injury and was transported to the Medical College of Georgia. The 1986 Isuzu sedan, driven by Hollis Nolan, 19, of Warrenville, allegedly struck him as Nolan traveled north in the inside lane while Carson crossed with a green light. Nolan, charged with disregarding a traffic signal, was uninjured. Four witnesses gave accounts to the trooper at the scene.
Local police urge helmet use and bike safety following Monday afternoon crash. A National SAFE KIDS Campaign report notes 70 percent of children ride bikes in America. in 1988, 203 under four died in bicycle crashes and 362,000 were treated in ERs.
The Aiken County Council asked Sheriff Howard Sellers to supply additional numbers to support a plan to merge the sheriff's office with the county jail. Sellers delivered a four page memo Monday night, but the council sent it to the Judicial and Public Safety Committee and set first reading for March 20.
City officials say the McGhees Mile owners Bruce and Janis McGhee asked to delay consideration of the Planning Commission recommendation at the Aiken City Council agenda set for February 26. The Carolina Cancer Center, eight years old, expands its cancer care at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Dr. Ahmad Gill notes the shift from a radiation center in 1992 to a full oncology unit with chemotherapy by 1994, enabling patients to receive radiation and chemotherapy in one location. Dr. Goetowski led inclusion of chemo, stressing patient convenience and integrated care.
A crewman on the USS Greeneville said he briefly stopped updating sonar plots because civilians were touring the control room as the submarine collided with the Ehime Maru off Oahu. NTSB indicated the sonar crew detected the Japanese vessel 71 minutes earlier during an emergency drill.
