For the next two months Hwy 386 Cherokee Drive will be closed at the Belvedere Clearwater Road intersection. Traffic is detoured onto 126 to S. 1 and back to Belvedere Clearwater Road.

A 14 year old boy, Carson Abele of Heathwood Drive, is listed in critical condition at an area hospital after a collision on Whiskey Road at Brookhaven Drive and Heathwood Drive. He was riding a Mongoose bicycle and was hit by a northbound Isuzu driven by 19 year old Hollis Noland. Witness Deborah Carpenter said the car sped up to beat a yellow light. Noland exited the vehicle in tears. No charges announced yet.
Sheriff Howard Sellers plans to ask Aiken County Council for first reading tonight of an ordinance merging the Hampton Avenue Detention Center with the sheriff s office. A four page summary shows jail budget growth far outpacing the sheriff s office since 1985 86 with jail budgets rising 374 8 percent and the sheriff s office 269 7 percent. Current year figures put the sheriff s budget at 5 3 million and the jail at 2 5 million with personnel rising from 88 to 133 and 26 to 78 respectively. Two entities have been unified through budget transfers to the communications center.
Colleges in Columbia push to lure high tech business to South Carolina, citing underfunded colleges as a barrier. USC and Clemson posted record research dollars but still trail North Carolina and Georgia Tech in engineering degrees and overall research, highlighting gaps in state support and graduate output.
Aiken Regional Medical Centers expanded its staff from under 30 physicians at opening to 111 on site, attracting doctors from across the nation and world. Sharon Hagan notes board certified physicians at 88 percent, with 225 beds and full services except burns and transplants. Dr. Dean Page, the sole local plastic surgeon after a 12 year Navy career, praises the hospital as well rounded with opportunities and needed community demand. Two physicians from Belgrade, the Zotovics, joined after working in New York City.
