Spartanburg lawmakers say Governor David Beasley pressured them to back a ban on video gambling. The House approved the measure amid Beasley’s intense lobbying, with aides warning lawmakers of GOP primary opposition if they supported a referendum. Rep. Lynn Seithel and Sen. Glenn McConnell cite coercive tactics and intimidation claims from Beasley’s office.

U N Secretary General Kofi Annan began a final campaign to end the Iraq crisis over UN inspections. Washington urged American families to leave Kuwait and Israel as 750 more troops were sent to Kuwait. Annan said he was reasonably optimistic a peaceful solution could emerge.
Strategy calls for strikes on Iraq air defenses and communications first, then Republican Guard units near Kuwait, followed by chemical and biological production sites if feasible. Overall aim is to flatten Iraqi capabilities rapidly and sustain the pressure for days or weeks, per senior planners.
Regions Bank announces a planned merger with Jacobs Bank of Scottsboro Alabama. Under the agreement Regions will exchange 13.50 shares of Regions stock for each Jacobs Bank share, valuing the deal at about 52 million dollars based on Regions stock near 38 dollars. Jacobs Bank operates seven offices in northern Alabama with assets of 190 million and equity of 23.4 million. Regions, based in Montgomery, runs over 450 offices across five southern states and has pending acquisitions in Georgia Arkansas Florida Louisiana and South Carolina. PALFED, formed by Regions merger with PALFED Inc, is headquartered in Aiken.
