Riordan tobacco plan faces fire over police scandal funds
Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan faces criticism for a plan to divert up to 300 million dollars from the national tobacco settlement to cover lawsuits tied to a police corruption scandal. Critics warn the funds should save lives, while officials note contracts and ADA mandates already earmark the money for street improvements. Riordan argues 100 million in bond money could substitute for 300 million in tobacco funds over 25 years.
