Beech Island Shed Fire Damages Property

An early morning fire behind a Beech Island residence destroyed a shed housing tools. Firefighters from Beech Island Jackson and Clearwater faced the blaze on Old Jackson Highway around 5:30 a.m. It took about 15 minutes to extinguish with damage estimated at 10 000 to 15 000 dollars and believed caused by an electrical malfunction.

Equipment expands infant hearing testing at Hitchcock Center

Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center adds an Auditory Brainstem Response system funded by Gregg Granville Foundation to test newborns and hard to test children. The ABR method is noninvasive and can be done while babies sleep. The effort involves Hitchcock, Aiken Regional Medical Centers and local physicians led by Dr Graham Wilde with Dr Ronald Lane among others.

Hubble ready for release after repairs and tests

The Hubble Space Telescope, repaired on the shuttle platform, was cleared for free flight in an 1:41 a.m. EST launch. After two spacewalks fixed the insulating cover, engineers confirmed the reaction wheel was functioning normally, easing concerns of an extra spacewalk to replace it.
