NASA adds a fifth spacewalk to finish insulating the Hubble Space Telescope during Discovery's mission. Gregory Harbaugh and Joe Tanner worked six stories above the cargo bay applying insulation blankets to two ripped areas, pausing to admire Earth and the shuttle view between tasks.
Obituary notices on page 5A report the deaths of Shirley Rowe of New Ellenton Mary Nemeth of Aiken and Inez Dunbar of Springfield with brief memorial details and survivor notes.

South Carolina manufacturers invest in costly, efficient equipment while promising job growth remains high. Gov Beasley cites almost 26 000 jobs and 5.7 billion in new investment, but capital intensity reduces required workers. Nucor plans a 500 million Berkeley County steel plant bringing 600 permanent jobs as plants upgrade.
Thomas Smith reports the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center adds a 1.2 million gym complex featuring a new basketball court a racquetball court and a large 100 by 30 foot multi purpose room with mirrored walls. The gym and room can be partitioned for simultaneous use and bookings are already underway.
The Odell Weeks Center will offer line dancing gymnastics karate and modeling with plans for yoga and Tai Chi instructors. Construction began in April 1996 and the complex is expected to open around April 1. Safety and security will be prioritized with a new main entrance and required ID cards.
The Gen Barnard E Bee Camp SCV plans a three day Battle of Aiken commemoration at Coleman Bridge Road east of Aiken with about 500 to 600 reenactors and many Civil War exhibitors. Organizers expect around 10 000 visitors and tours for local schoolchildren.
Rosamund McDuffie, 1996 Aiken Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year, leads preservation efforts for St Marys Help of Christians Church windows. Cracked from heat and sun, the 1952 stained glass will be restored after removing a false ceiling and relocating a stored panel. Shenandoah Stained Glass will complete the four month project.
