Paul Koon Faces Death Penalty Again In Aiken

Convicted murderer Paul F. Koon is sentenced to death in Aiken County after a 1980 murder conviction led to a resentencing. The jury, moved by the case and testimony, imposed capital punishment for the aggravated kidnapping in Valerie White Newsome’s killing.

Aiken Doctor Dr. Wallace D McNair Retires After 28 Years

Dr. Wallace D McNair, a longtime Aiken general practitioner, retires from private practice effective today. Don L Pennington will take over the office at 139 Waterloo Street SW after a month of file handover. Patients and staff recall his calm manner, accessibility, and genuine care as he leaves a lasting Lee in the community.

His Plans Named USC Aiken Chancellor Designate

Dr. Robert E. Alexander was named to replace Wil C. Casper as USC Aiken chancellor and will take the post in July. He aims to expand USC Aiken’s reach beyond traditional students to serve citizens of all ages while preserving existing academic standards. President James B. Holderman lauded his selection and expects continued strong leadership. Casper becomes chancellor emeritus.

Francis Townsend former Graniteville president dies at 80

Francis A. Townsend 80 former Graniteville Company president and board chairman died in a Richmond County hospital. He joined Graniteville in 1929 and retired in 1970. Graveside rites were set for Graniteville Cemetery with local clergy officiating. Townsend helped found USC Aiken and chaired the Aiken County Commission on Higher Education, later earning honorary USC life membership. Survivors include his wife Ella and three children. memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Planning Commission Nominates Pixie Baxter as Acting Planning Director

The Aiken County Planning Commission confirmed Pixie Baxter as acting planning director to replace Steve Szablewski who resigns today. County Administrator W Scott Barnes appointed Baxter earlier this week arguing the county reorganization plan assigns naming authority to him. The meeting also welcomed Betty T Moore and Curtis Williams and granted extensions and approvals for Garden of Eden and Country Place II amid a canceled executive session.
