Francis A. Townsend 80 former Graniteville Company president and board chairman died in a Richmond County hospital. He joined Graniteville in 1929 and retired in 1970. Graveside rites were set for Graniteville Cemetery with local clergy officiating. Townsend helped found USC Aiken and chaired the Aiken County Commission on Higher Education, later earning honorary USC life membership. Survivors include his wife Ella and three children. memorials to the American Cancer Society.
