The Commerce Department reports a $115.78 billion U.S. trade deficit for 1993, up 37 percent from 1992, with Japan accounting for $59.3 billion of the total. Imports and exports hit record highs, but imports grew faster. Unemployment claims rose to 371,000 and January inflation showed no change. Japan pledges market opening measures to ease the gap.
