A four night five day vacation for two at Hilton Head Island will be awarded Monday in the Aiken Washington's Birthday Sale. The sale runs Thursday to Saturday with 33 participating merchants. Coupons in the Washington's Birthday section of the Aiken Standard enter the drawing.
Israel's Nobel prizewinning author S. Y. Agon died of a heart attack at 81, after months of illness, announced by state radio. He was the second 1966 Nobel recipient to die within days, following Dr. Peyton Rous in New York at 90. Agon shared the literature prize with Sweden's Nelly Sachs.
Hearings start Wednesday for 14 youths arrested in a three county North Carolina narcotics crackdown. The group includes the 18 year old son of UNC Chancellor J Carlyle Sitterson and ages range 17 to 22 with four college students and a high school pupil. Authorities say they were major suppliers to students in Orange Durham and Moore counties.
Deputy Attorney General Richard G. Kleindienst presented the Nixon administration position to Congress urging a constitutional amendment to lower the federal voting age to 18. He cited Britain abandoning the 21 year old standard and argued tradition should yield to practical realities.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved G Harrold Carswell's nomination by a 13 to 4 vote, drawing sharp protests from Clarence Mitchell of the NAACP and AFL-CIO. Sen Birch Bayh, who opposed Carswell, warned the pick could embolden violent extremists.
Sen Edward M Kennedy is reported recovering from bacterial pneumonia and confined to bed in Palm Beach Florida. Dr Rotter says he is on liquids and looks good. Kennedy voted by telephone against the Senate Judiciary Committee approval of Judge G Harrold Carswell while the panel approved the nomination 13 to 4.
Clarinetist Benny Goodman with a 17 piece band and Florence Whittle drew 6 000 fans at Republic Palace in Bucharest for two concerts sponsored by the Romanian State Organization for Artistic Tours. The audience greeted them warmly after an enthusiastic reception the day prior.
Aiken barbers say growing long hair hurts business but not haircut prices. They note more men let hair grow, blaming higher grocery and meat costs. Ages of long haired customers vary widely with one example of a 57-year-old who trims weekly. Most say customers still get decent haircuts.
A $507.6 million state budget bill, aligned with McNair’s austerity plan, goes to the South Carolina House for debate. The measure, from the Ways and Means Committee, is about $31.7 million over current spending but $55.3 million below agency requests, and predicts a balanced year with modest revenue surplus. It includes raises for House members effective January 1971, and raises for the governor and constitutional officers.
In Karlsruhe Germany the 1st German Supreme Court rejected Anna Anderson Manoham's appeal challenging a lower court ruling that she did not prove she was Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of Czar Nicholas II.
The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce will survey air carrier service and demand in the Greater Aiken area in cooperation with the Coastal Plains Regional Commission. J. E. Greiner Co. of Tampa conducts the overall study to assess traveler needs and airline services.
Israeli warplanes pressed to within 19 miles of Cairo attacking two Egyptian bases storing SA2 missiles. The strikes targeted near Helwan with planes returning safely to Israel as Egypt and the Soviet Union pledged support amid a broader canal front exchange.
Three Aiken youths and two juveniles were arrested and arraigned before Magis trate Glenn Holley after a weekend spree of thefts and breakins. A juvenile faces three counts of disorderly conduct and two counts of destruction of personal property. The case involves a disturbance at Smith Hazel Recreation Center and windows broken downtown. Two 17 year olds face breaking and entering auto with intent to steal bonds set at 500 dollars. A 23 year old, David Marshall Jr., is jailed on burglary charges for stealing a .22 pistol and ammo from Rosalie Jackson's home. A juvenile and another juvenile with bonds under 1,000 dollars are linked to related thefts including a stereo deck valued at 111 dollars from a car at Aiken Variety Restaurant tied to Margaret Kitchens.
A flim flam artist duped two locals in downtown Aiken over the weekend. One man lost $35 in a drugstore scheme claiming funds were held to secure more return, and another $50 disappeared in a department store setup. An armed robbery report by Steve Roland noted a knife thrust at his abdomen on Chesterfield Street near Colton Avenue bridge, with a film roll theft added. A purse snatching in a grocery parking lot led Mrs. Gladys Willis to report thefts from her and her daughter. one purse was recovered dropping the thief’s purse. Missing is the daughter’s $20 purse.
American B52 bombers dropped nearly 1000 tons on suspected North Vietnamese targets along the Cambodian border southwest of the Ben Het Special Forces camp. The raids, aimed at deterring a siege of camps in the central highlands, come as U.S. commanders report ongoing pressure and limited enemy activity in the region.
