A Soviet informant says Moscow seeks to probe whether China can be reconciled to end the Communist world split. Principal negotiator Vassily Kuznetsov will lead a long round with China’s Chiao Kuan-hua in talks begun Oct. 20, signaling broader aims and potential widening of the breach if failure occurs.
Week-long festivities for the Chinese New Year culminated in a parade through San Francisco's Chinatown drawing an estimated 200000 spectators. Miss Chinatown USA Marion Kam Yin Lee 21 of Honolulu rode in the parade amid dragons lions floats and bands with no arrests or disturbances reported. Fire officials noted there were no false alarms despite constant firecrackers and police had banned the explosives.
Washington report cites Rep. Richard Bolling saying Southern Democrats should be expelled from the party. He accuses “Southern racist reactionaries” and big city machine remnants as McCormack allies. He singles out Rep. L Mendel Rivers as unfit to remain chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
Aiken celebrated the Carolina Tricentennial with a big Valentine weekend. Mrs. Dwight Eisenhower and Gov. and Mrs. Robert McNair attended events, including a Drums Along the Savannah pageant and a reception. The weekend drew hundreds for tours, polo, a musical revue, and church performances.
Cleveland report notes the Student Mobilization Committee and allied groups plan a unified spring offensive with April 15 actions. Tax day is set as a central action by the New Mobilization Committee and the Vietnam Moratorium Committee to protest war costs.
Surgeon General Jesse Steinfeld argues the pill has saved many lives though safer contraception exists for some women. He notes no method is entirely risk free and compares pregnancy complications to pill risks on the ABC program Issues and Answers.
Senator Gaylord Nelson introduced legislation to protect shoreline areas. The intergovernmental program would include the National Lake Areas System covering Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana Lake Champlain in New York and Vermont Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada Wyoming's Yellowstone and Minnesota's Lake of the Woods.
Geoffrey Hague 16 an Eagle Scout from Morristown Tenn remains missing in the snow covered Great Smoky Mountains National Park after a seven day search. Rangers scale down operations to a recovery effort. 275 people and 26 tracking dogs searched including two dogs owned by Rev Billy Graham.
Former Gov George C Wallace becomes a grandfather as his daughter Bobbi Jo gives birth to a baby boy on Sunday at Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham Alabama. The infant is the son of Bobbi Jo and contractor James Parsons.
The Senate Judiciary Committee resumed on G Harrold Carswell with expectations of approval after resolving Sen Bayh s demand for a direct presidential elections vote. Sen Tydings said he would not block action, while six senators plan to oppose the nomination on the floor.
President Nixon will present a 25 000 word global report to Congress as a new strategy for peace. The plan aims to improve U S Soviet relations and address Vietnam and the Israeli Arab conflict with no specifics given. Nixon returns to Washington after a Florida holiday and will host a morning East Room ceremony for national medals.
More than 400 American fighter bombers hit North Vietnamese targets in eastern Laos in what officials called some of the heaviest air raids of the war. An A1E Skyraider was shot down over the Plain of Jars and the pilot presumed killed. In South Vietnam allied forces stormed a Viet Cong and North Vietnamese battalion near Da Nang, with 182 enemy killed and 16 captured, while South Vietnamese losses reached 31 killed and 82 wounded.
A Dominican Airlines DC 9 crashed into the Caribbean five miles off Hispaniola with 102 aboard. Rescue officials reported no survivors. Passengers included seven U.S. citizens and 45 Puerto Ricans along with Dominicans and foreigners. Wreckage was spotted offshore and search efforts continued through the night.
Eugene J. Oyler executive editor of the Aiken Standard was elected president of the South Carolina Associated Press News Council at its winter meeting in Columbia. Officers named include Joe Rickenbacker vice president and R G Avakian and William A Collins as directors.
